Programs for Girls
Programs for Girls
FIRST Place runs a number of workshops and camps specifically for girls interested in science, technology, and robotics.
Girls Connect is an intense one-day all-girl introduction to FIRST LEGO League and the FIRST Tech Challenge.
FIRST LEGO League (8-14 years old): Students work alongside professional engineers and high school and college role models to learn how to build and program a robot using LEGO NXT Kits. It is our hope that these students will continue their involvement by joining FIRST LEGO League teams in the fall.
FIRST Tech Challenge (12-15 years old): Students work alongside professional engineers and college role models to build and program a robot. It is our hope that these students will continue their involvement by joining FIRST Tech Challenge teams in the fall.
At the end of the day, we’ll show off our robots in a friendly competition. Pizza and awards will complete the event.
We invite girls to bring four friends and register as teams of five. Don’t have four friends who are interested? The Girl Scouts will try to find others to attend with you.
Team start-up awards will be offered to particularly promising teams that attend Girls Connect to assist in registration fees for FIRST LEGO League or the FIRST Tech Challenge, depending on age and interest. These awards allow the impact of Girls Connect to go well beyond the one-day workshop, by giving teams the means to participate in our programs long-term.
